The ingrown nail most often develops on the big toe in most cases on one side. Sometimes it occurs on both sides of one toe or on one side of both toe. The nail plate presses on the lateral nail fold which becomes infected with bacteria, so a red, swollen, suppurating, bleeding, painful inflammation develops in the lateral nail fold. Often hemorrhagic branch tissue also develops, which further increases the pain.
